Chapter Fourteen

AMBER

"Miss Krieg." the dean nods and gestures to an open chair.

I hesitate, but I want to get this over with. My stomach is in knots and I worry I’m going to throw up.

A woman with dark hair stands in his office. She wears a white pantsuit with a gold chain around her neck. Her wide smile showed too many teeth.

"This is Mrs. Templer."

"Oh, call me Izabel." She rushes over to me and takes my hand, shaking it.

Templer? “You're Darren's mother?" Why was she here and she wanted to speak with me?

Izabel pulled her chair closer to mine and leaned in like we were pals. She smells like flowers and baby powder.

I glance back at the dean and he steeples his fingers together like this is some test and my nerves jump up a notch.

"Darren spoke highly of you," Izabel says. "I'm relieved to see that you're unharmed from killing that demon."

My stomach churns like a blender. "It wasn't me, it was the wards."

She chuckles. "My dear, don't be modest. What you have is a gift. Few witches are gifted with a much greater power—the ability to manipulate the Source. With it, they can do things that even I can't. They are powerful and they are very, very rare."

"I don't understand."

"It appears you've inherited some rare abilities from a long-lost bloodline. You're powerful and with the right training, you can far exceed the best students here."

She sounds a little too eager. There's something she's not telling me or Matthis has me paranoid.

"What is the catch?"

Her smirk has me taking a step backward. She looks like a cat about to pounce.

"If you agree, it will be my job to keep you safe." She smooths a hand over her pantsuit. "You cannot leave campus. It's for security reasons and we don't want you getting distracted by the outside world."

The weight of her words has me sinking into the empty chair. She remains standing and the dean clears his throat.

"Of course, you would have to agree to be under my jurisdiction. But together, we could do great things, we could eliminate hundreds of demons."

Matthis. My heart clenches in my chest. I lean back in the chair, feeling nauseous.

"I've heard a lot about you. Darren has told me you're one of his best students."

Izabel pulls up a chair and sits next to me.

"He did? I can hardly believe that." I feel the heat in my cheeks, knowing the dean is watching me carefully. So this is what Darren was apologizing for. He must have seen me and Matthis fighting the demon and told the dean and his mother. Not sure if I should be flattered or angry.

"I'm sure you can do anything you put your mind to." She pats my knee and I feel a prickle against my aura. Almost like she's assessing my ability and I hold my breath, scooting away from her slightly.

"But I'm only nineteen," and a half, "witches who fight demons head-on are twenty-one or older."

She flashes me a smile that doesn't reach her eyes.
